About Randy

Randall Putz has been a dedicated public servant and community leader in Big Bear Lake for over 15 years. First elected to the Bear Valley Unified School District Governing Board in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, he went on to join the Big Bear Lake City Council in 2014, earning re-elections in 2018 and 2022. On the Council, Randall has served multiple terms as Mayor Pro Tem and was appointed Mayor in both 2020 and 2023.

In addition to his Council work, Randall has chaired the Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority and the Big Bear Fire Authority, and served as Director of the Mojave Desert Mountain Integrated Waste Joint Powers Authority. He has represented the region as President of the Desert-Mountain Division of the League of California Cities, served on Cal Cities’ Governance Evaluation Project Advisory Group, and in 2024 was appointed to the League’s Board of Directors. His service has been recognized statewide: in 2023 he received Cal Cities’ Larry Chimbole Outstanding Public Service Award, and in 2024 the Triple Torch Award, the League’s highest honor for leadership and continuing education.

Regionally, Randall represented District 11 (Barstow, Big Bear Lake, Needles, Twenty-nine Palms, and Yucca Valley) as a Regional Councilmember for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), the largest metropolitan planning organization in the country. He also advised the Southern California Montane Forests Project, a multi-jurisdictional partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey, USDA Forest Service, San Diego State University, and Climate Science Alliance, which developed a groundbreaking conservation strategy for Southern California’s forests.

Education has always been central to Randall’s public service. Beyond his two elected terms on the local School Board, he is a founding member of the Bear Valley Education Trust and has regularly advocated for Big Bear at the County and State levels.

Outside of elected office, Randall brings over 25 years of experience in marketing and technology consulting for corporate and government clients. In 2018, he opened the Chirp Nature Center in Big Bear Lake’s Village, combining his entrepreneurial drive with his passion for environmental stewardship. He also co-founded the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation, working to expand access to the outdoors.

A longtime resident of Big Bear Lake, Randall raised his children in the community and is deeply rooted in its civic and environmental life. An avid outdoorsman, he can often be found trail running or mountain biking in the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest.
